CONCUSSION BILL 143 To help make the "play or not play" decision easier, last month, the State of Ohio passed a bill aimed at keeping athletes safer to hopefully prevent serious injuries. House Bill 143 requires that youth athletes who exhibits concussion symptoms immediately be pulled from a game. That player then can't return until receiving a "Return to Play" note from a doctor. In addition, the bill requires that steps be taken to educate parents, youth coaches and referees about symptoms and treatment. Training programs posted online by the Ohio Department of Heath, must be taken every 3 years by coaches and referees. More information on these classes and deadline for these classes will be posted when they become available. Bill 143: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/bills.cfm?ID=129_HB_143 At our February 9th OYSAN Workshop and Awards banquet, we will have a representative from University Hospitals, who worked closely in lobbying for this Bill, talking about Concussions and can answer any of your questions about what you will need to do in the near future once it becomes active. Remember to RSVP to this event at http://www.oysan.org/Membership_Benefits/AGM_Hall_of_Fame_Workshop.htm as we predict, this being a heavily attended session.
Executive Director Resigns OYSAN is sad to announce the departure of Ms. Pam Menick as Executive Director. Pam had previously served Ohio North as the state registrar and had been with the organization since 1996. In announcing the resignation, OYSAN President Paul Emhoff praised Ms. Menick’s loyalty and dedication and noted that Ohio North had lost a significant part of its history. He added, “We thank Pam for her contribution to our organization and wish her well as she moves into a new phase of her life.” A national search for Ms. Menick’s successor is underway. The job posting is found with the side articles.
